Indian equities witnessed another volatile expiry-day session on 13 August as easing U.S. rate concerns supported sentiment, but higher crude oil prices and Middle East tensions kept investors cautious. Strong earnings and buying in select stocks helped the Sensex close higher even as the Nifty ended in the red.

The Indian stock market ended with mixed results on 13 August 2026, as the BSE Sensex closed higher while the Nifty 50 extended its losing streak for the third consecutive session. Weekly F&O expiry, elevated crude oil prices and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East kept traders cautious despite supportive global cues and strong corporate earnings.

The BSE Sensex gained 113.61 points (0.15%) to close at 78,079.96, while the Nifty 50 fell 40.10 points (0.16%) to settle at 24,395.85. The difference between the two benchmark indices was largely influenced by volatility during the Closing Auction Session (CAS), which continued to create unusual closing movements.

The market traded in a narrow range for most of the day before witnessing sharp swings during the final hour of trading. Investors remained focused on quarterly earnings, crude oil prices and global developments, while broader market indices once again outperformed the frontline benchmarks.

The expiry of weekly derivatives contracts remained one of the biggest reasons behind the day's volatility. Traders aggressively adjusted positions during the final trading hour, resulting in sharp movements around the closing session.

𝗠𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗹𝗲 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗧𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀

Investors continued monitoring developments in the Middle East after peace negotiations showed little progress. Geopolitical uncertainty remained a major factor supporting higher crude oil prices.

Brent crude traded near $88 per barrel, increasing concerns about India's inflation outlook and current-account balance.

𝗨.𝗦. 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗳

Financial stocks remained under pressure because of concerns that the RBI's proposed loan-pricing framework could reduce banks' pricing flexibility and impact margins.

While benchmark indices remained mixed, mid-cap and small-cap stocks continued outperforming.

  • Nifty Midcap gained around 0.2%

This indicated that investors continued finding opportunities beyond large-cap stocks.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗡𝗲𝘅𝘁

  • Investors will closely monitor crude oil prices and developments in the Middle East.

  • Quarterly earnings will continue driving stock-specific movements.

  • Banking stocks will remain in focus because of RBI's proposed loan-pricing rules.

  • The market will watch whether the Nifty can regain levels above 24,400 after three consecutive sessions of declines.

  • Foreign institutional investor activity and global market trends will remain important for short-term sentiment.

𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸

The short-term outlook remains cautious but stable.

Strong corporate earnings, resilience in broader markets and easing U.S. rate concerns continue supporting Indian equities. However, elevated crude oil prices, geopolitical uncertainty and pressure on banking stocks could keep volatility high.

Long-term investors should continue focusing on fundamentally strong companies with consistent earnings growth, while short-term traders should remain disciplined during expiry-driven sessions.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗡𝗲𝘅𝘁?

The Nifty's 24,300–24,500 range remains an important technical zone. A sustained move above 24,500 could improve sentiment, while continued weakness below this range may increase selling pressure.

If crude oil prices cool and geopolitical tensions ease, Indian equities could witness a stronger recovery in the coming sessions.

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻

The Indian stock market delivered another volatile session on 13 August 2026, with the Sensex gaining 113.61 points while the Nifty slipped 40.10 points.

Weekly expiry, higher crude oil prices and Middle East tensions kept investors cautious, but strong earnings from companies such as Tata Motors, Jio Financial Services and Astral supported stock-specific buying. Realty and Consumer Durables outperformed, while Metals and Private Banks remained under pressure.

Going forward, crude oil prices, global developments, RBI-related banking rules and corporate earnings are expected to remain the key drivers of the Indian stock market.
